New Delhi: The National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management-Kundli (NIFTEM-K) under the Ministry of Food Processing Industries, has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Saskatchewan (USask), Saskatoon, Canada, to strengthen academic and research collaboration in food sciences.
The agreement was signed by Dr. Harinder Singh Oberoi, Director, NIFTEM-K, and Dr. Baljit Singh, Vice President (Research), USask. The signing ceremony was attended by Scott Moe, Premier of Saskatchewan; IAS Avinash Joshi, Secretary, Ministry of Food Processing Industries; and D. Praveen, Joint Secretary, MoFPI, underscoring the strategic importance of the partnership.
Centre of Excellence in Pulse Protein
The MoU gains added significance following the announcement of a Centre of Excellence in Pulse Protein through joint collaboration between India and Canada. The initiative will be led by NIFTEM-K from the Indian side and USask from the Canadian side.Â
Academic and Research Collaboration
Under the five-year agreement, the two institutions will jointly develop online teaching and training programmes in food science and technology, food systems economics, and business development. The partnership also includes short-term exchange programmes for faculty, researchers, and students to promote cross-learning and global exposure.
The MoU outlines plans for joint research projects, collaborative funding proposals and integrated degree programmes in Food Processing Technology. Both institutions will organise seminars, workshops and industry-oriented short courses to strengthen skill development and innovation.
Driving Innovation in Sustainable Food Systems
The collaboration aims to combine USask’s strong agrifood research ecosystem with NIFTEM-K’s role as a one-stop solution provider for India’s food processing sector. Leaders from both institutions said the partnership would drive innovation, capacity building, and technology-led solutions for sustainable food systems.
This MoU marks a major step in expanding NIFTEM-K’s global engagement and reinforcing India’s leadership in food technology, entrepreneurship, and management through meaningful international partnerships.
