Some newly created Google accounts may now start with only 5GB of free cloud storage, instead of the standard 15GB, unless users complete phone number verification. The update affects storage shared across Gmail, Google Drive, and Google Photos, raising fresh questions about how Google plans to manage free cloud access. Users have started noticing new account messages from Google stating: “Your account includes 5GB of storage”, with an option to unlock the full 15GB free storage at no additional cost after verifying a phone number. Earlier, Google accounts automatically received 15GB of free cloud storage without additional conditions.
What Has Changed In Google’s Storage Policy?
Google has also quietly updated language on its support pages. Earlier, the company stated that every account came with “15 GB of cloud storage at no charge.” The wording now says users can receive “up to 15 GB” free storage, signalling a policy shift for some new signups.
The move appears linked to Google’s effort to reduce spam, bot-created accounts, and repeated misuse of free storage systems. By tying storage benefits to verified phone numbers, the company may be trying to limit fake account creation while managing rising cloud storage demand. For existing users, there is no indication yet that Google is reducing free storage. The reported change appears limited to new Gmail and Google account registrations.
