Kolkata, May 25 (APAC Media): West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that the Centre’s flagship health insurance programme, Ayushman Bharat, will be rolled out in the state from July 1.
The announcement came after a virtual meeting with Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda in Kolkata
The move marks a significant development in Centre-State relations, as this will be the first time West Bengal becomes part of the Ayushman Bharat scheme since its launch in 2018.
Chief Minister Adhikari said beneficiaries of the state-run Swasthya Sathi scheme would now be integrated with Ayushman Bharat to ensure wider healthcare coverage for residents. He also informed that a Memorandum of Understanding related to the Ayushman Bharat Arogya Mandir initiative would be signed in New Delhi in June.
The Chief Minister further revealed that the state government has proposed increasing the number of Pradhan Mantri Jan Aushadhi Kendra outlets in West Bengal from 117 to 469. Proposals for new medical colleges in Alipurduar, Kalimpong, and South Dinajpur, along with a new AIIMS for North Bengal, have also been sent to the Centre.
