New Delhi, June 8 (APAC Media): The Central Government has extended the tenure of Swaminathan Janakiraman as Deputy Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for another two years.
This ensures continuity in the central bank’s regulatory and supervisory leadership. The extension is effective from June 26, 2026.
The reappointment comes at a time when India’s banking sector is navigating rapid digitalisation, rising credit growth and evolving regulatory challenges.

Key Role in RBI Leadership
Janakiraman was first appointed as RBI Deputy Governor in June 2023 after an extensive career at the State Bank of India.
Since assuming office, he has played important role in strengthening banking supervision, risk management and financial sector stability.
He oversees several key RBI departments, including:
- Department of Supervision
- Inspection Department
- Financial Inclusion and Development Department
- Consumer Education and Protection Department
Working under RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra, he is one of the four Deputy Governors responsible for guiding the country’s banking and financial system.
The RBI currently has four Deputy Governors:
- Swaminathan Janakiraman
- Poonam Gupta
- Shirish Chandra Murmu
- Rohit Jain
The arrangement is in accordance with the provisions of the RBI Act, 1934.
Nearly 35 Years at SBI
Janakiraman’s banking career began at SBI in December 1988, where he spent almost 35 years before moving to the RBI.
In his final role at SBI, Janakiraman served as Managing Director for Corporate Banking and Subsidiaries from January 2021 to June 2023.
He oversaw corporate banking, commercial credit and the bank’s subsidiaries.
Janakiraman also headed SBI’s risk management and compliance functions and played an important role in strengthening governance and resolving stressed assets.
Strong Academic and Professional Credentials
Born on February 4, 1964, Janakiraman combines decades of banking experience with specialised expertise. His qualifications include:
- B.Com degree from the University of Madras
- Executive MBA in Risk Management and International Trade Finance
- Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers (CAIIB)
- Certified Documentary Credit Specialist (CDCS) qualification
- Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialist (CAMS) certification
Wide Ranging Experience
Over the course of his career, Janakiraman handled international banking, trade finance, institutional banking and correspondent banking operations.
He also served as Chief General Manager of SBI’s Hyderabad Circle.
He represented SBI on the boards of several institutions, including NPCI, NPCI International, Yes Bank, Jio Payments Bank and Bank of Bhutan.
The extension reflects the government’s confidence in Janakiraman’s leadership at a time when India’s financial sector is undergoing rapid change.
