New Delhi, July 24 (APAC Media): Senior officer IAS Archana Varma has been elevated to the rank and pay of Secretary to the Government of India.
The move is part of the Centre’s latest top-level bureaucratic reshuffle approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).
A 1995-batch Assam-Meghalaya cadre IAS officer, Varma is the Mission Director of the National Water Mission under the Ministry of Jal Shakti.
Her current post has been upgraded to the Secretary level.
She will take over as Secretary, Department of Official Language in the Ministry of Home Affairs after Ansuli Arya retires on September 30, 2026.
IAS Archana Varma has over three decades of administrative experience. She has served in several key roles in both the Assam government and the Centre.
She has worked in urban development, public administration, governance and institutional reforms.
Before joining the Centre, she served as Principal Secretary in the Assam government. She also held important district-level assignments.
Since September 2022, Varma has led the National Water Mission.
She has focused on improving water use efficiency, conservation and sustainable water management across the country.
Under her leadership, the Mission has promoted programmes to improve water efficiency in agriculture, industry and urban areas.
She has also encouraged the use of technology to strengthen water governance and improve institutional capacity.
Her elevation is part of a wider bureaucratic reshuffle aimed at ensuring leadership continuity across key ministries.
As the next Secretary, Department of Official Language, Varma is expected to bring her wide administrative experience to one of the Centre’s important policy departments.
The appointment marks another milestone in her civil service career and reflects the government’s confidence in her leadership and administrative experience.
