Noida, July 27 (APAC Media): The Income Tax Department on Monday announced that over 4 crore Income Tax Returns (ITR) have been submitted for the assessment year (AY) 2026-27, while advising taxpayers who are yet to complete their filings to do so well ahead of the prescribed deadline.
The department, in an official statement, said the achievement underscores the sustained momentum in tax compliance and the increasing adoption of the e-filing platform by taxpayers. It urged taxpayers to refrain from postponing their submissions until the final days, citing the possibility of delays and technical challenges due to increased traffic on the portal.
“More than 4 crore ITRs for AY 2026-27 have been filed. Taxpayers who have not yet filed their returns are requested to do so at the earliest and avoid the last-minute rush,” the department said.

The Income Tax Department attributed the robust filing numbers to improved digital services, simplified return filing procedures and increased taxpayer awareness. It said continuous efforts are being made to make the filing process more convenient and user-friendly.
The department also urged taxpayers to verify all financial information before submitting their returns. It advised them to reconcile income details, Tax Deducted at Source (TDS), bank account information and eligible deductions with the records available on the e-filing portal to ensure accurate filing.

“Filing accurate returns helps in faster processing and timely refunds and reduces the possibility of notices arising from discrepancies,” the department said.
Officials said taxpayers filing their returns early benefit from quicker processing and refund issuance while also avoiding technical glitches that often occur as the filing deadline approaches due to a surge in portal traffic.
The department has been regularly issuing reminders through social media and other communication channels to encourage timely compliance. It said behavioural nudges and outreach initiatives have contributed to the strong pace of return filing this year.
Tax experts have also advised eligible taxpayers not to delay filing their returns, noting that late filing could attract penalties, interest on outstanding tax liabilities and other consequences under the Income Tax Act.
The Income Tax Department reiterated that taxpayers should use the official e-filing portal, carefully review all information before submission and complete the verification process to ensure their returns are successfully processed.
With over 4 crore returns already filed, officials expressed confidence that the number will continue to rise steadily in the coming days as more taxpayers complete the annual filing process ahead of the deadline.
