Indian shuttler Suhas Yathiraj won the silver medal at the Tokyo Paraolympics this morning after losing to top seed Marcus Lazur in the Men’s Badminton SL4 event.
While this news in itself is commendable, Yathiraj’s achievement assumes higher proportions considering he is currently the District Magistrate (DM) of Gautam Buddha Nagar (Noida) in UP.
Suhas Lalinakere Yathiraj (born on 2 July 1983) and hailing from Hassan, Kaenataka is currently ranked world No.2 in Men’s Singles.
He is an IAS officer of the 2007 batch of Uttar Pradesh cadre. Suhas, with a leg impairment, cracked civil services to become India’s first specially-abled IAS officer in 2007
Before serving as District Magistrate of Gautam Buddha Nagar, he has also served as the District Magistrate of Prayagraj. He became National Champion after winning Gold Medal in Men’s Singles category at 2nd National Para Badminton Championships held at Varanasi in March 2018.
In 2016 he was the recipient of Uttar Pradesh’s highest civilian honour, Yash Bharti.
He was shortlisted for Prime Minister’s award for excellent performance in Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Award
Yathiraj developed Mobile Application for Kuposhan ka Darpan and Pregnancy ka Darpan, to help undernourished children and pregnant mothers.
He also developed Mobile Application for helping differently abled voters during general elections
During his stint as District Magistrate, Azamgarh, he also got shortlisted for Prime Minister’s award for exemplary work in PM Jan Dhan Yojna on civil services day, 2016.
