New Delhi: In a significant step towards realising the vision of establishing India as a global electronics powerhouse, the government has launched the Electronics Repair and Refurbishment Services Organisation (ERSO) Pilot initiative, said the Ministry of Electronics and IT in a statement.
The initiative aims to validate transformative policy and process changes that will position India as the preferred destination for repair services of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) products worldwide.
The statement also highlighted that the Ministry of Ele
ctronics and Information Technology (MeitY), Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), and the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) have worked together with industry representatives to introduce these policy and process changes.
The goal is to make India an attractive hub for repair services, which is estimated to generate revenue of up to USD 20 billion and create millions of jobs over the next five years, the statement added.
Recognising the potential of this project as a game-changer for India, the government has provided its full support to establish the country as a world leader in this previously untapped domain.
The transformative policy and process changes have been made possible under the guidance of Union Minister of Electronics and IT, Railways, and Communications, Ashwini Vaishnaw, and the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the statement added.
Over the past few months, various government departments have collaborated with the Repair Industry to introduce the necessary policy and process changes, said the statement. These changes are now being validated through a limited pilot program launched in Bengaluru recently.
The pilot program, scheduled to run for three months, has received participation from five prominent companies: Flex, Lenovo, CTDI, R-Logic, and Aforeserve. Following the pilot phase, a comprehensive assessment will be conducted to evaluate the efficacy and efficiency of the proposed changes, with necessary modifications to be implemented as required, the statement added.
Aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to support Mission LiFE (Lessen the Footprint on the Earth), the ERSO initiative serves as a gamechanger for global environmental sustainability. It underscores India’s commitment to the environment and the planet by promoting the extension of device life through affordable and reliable repair services for ICT products worldwide, the statement added.
