New Delhi: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India has mandated that telcos deploy AI and ML filters within 30 days to block unsolicited calls and messages, commonly referred to as spam.
In an order issued Tuesday, the regulator has said that all telcos have to deploy Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning based systems capable of constantly evolving to deal with new signatures, new patterns and new techniques used by unregistered telemarketers.
“Access Providers have also been directed to share intelligence with other Access Providers using DLT platform. Access Providers have further been directed to ensure that such UCC_Detect System shall detect senders who are sending Unsolicited Commercial Communications in bulk and not complying with the provisions of the regulations,” the regulator added.
Under this order, telcos will have to share details of spam callers with other carriers using blockchain technology thus creating a common database.
The telcos were supposed to have begun deployment of the AI and ML systems from 1 May. Despite some of the carriers having introduced them on their networks, mobile phone users are yet to receive significant relief from spam callers.
Trai has also said previously that 10-digit numbers used for spam calling will also be banned, and that telcos will also be required to deploy caller ID options to ensure spam filtering.
Phone users have complained of getting unwanted calls and messages pushing loans and services, etc, despite signing up for the do not disturb (DND) option to filter unwanted calls and messages.
