The University Grants Commission has issued a directive prohibiting universities from including Aadhaar numbers to be printed on degrees and provisional certificates of students.
This decision by the higher education regulator comes amidst reports that the state governments are in favour of printing students’ full Aadhaar numbers on certificates and degrees issued by universities, with the objective of verification of said document during further admissions or recruitment.
According to Aadhaar regulations, “no entity in possession of the Aadhar number shall make public any database or record containing the same unless the Aadhaar number has been redacted or blacked out through appropriate means,” UGC secretary Manish Joshi has brought to knowledge via a notice. Higher Education institutions are therefore needed to strictly comply with the rules and regulations meted out by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI).
This directive by the UGC is a significant step toward enhancing privacy and security within the education system and for graduates across the country as it will reduce the risk of identity theft and misuse of sensitive data.
