New Delhi: Apple is planning to make an effort to enhance its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities, spearheaded by key leaders including John Giannandrea, Craig Federighi, and Eddy Cue and is estimated to have an annual budget of around $1 billion, according to the reports.
Apple is confident in its pursuit of advancement within the swiftly changing AI landscape. This endeavour becomes all the more crucial given the advancements made by rivals such as Microsoft, Meta (formerly Facebook), Google, and Amazon. Notably, this aspiration has gained prominence in the wake of OpenAI’s introduction of ChatGPT last year. Apple’s strategy extends beyond mere enhancements to its voice assistant, Siri, including the integration of AI into its iOS operating system for iPhones.
The report informs that John Giannandrea is taking the lead in developing a new AI system while also enhancing Siri for deeper integration. This improved version of Siri could potentially become available as early as next year.
Craig Federighi, responsible for supervising iOS development for iPhones and MacOS for MacBooks, is also working on combining AI into Apple’s operating systems. His team’s main focus is on incorporating features powered by Apple’s extensive language model. This model utilises vast datasets to enhance AI capabilities, aiming to improve user interactions with Siri and the Messages app.
Apple’s software engineering divisions are contemplating the integration of generative AI into their development tools, such as Xcode. This move has the potential to expedite app development, similar to platforms like Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot.
Eddy Cue and his team are actively investigating the incorporation of AI into a diverse range of Apple’s apps. This effort includes the introduction of new functionalities into Apple Music, such as auto-generated playlists, and enhancing productivity apps. Furthermore, the consideration of employing generative AI in applications like Pages and Keynote is ongoing, with the aim of aiding users in tasks like content creation and slide deck design. Moreover, internal customer service applications within AppleCare are currently undergoing testing with generative AI integration.
A significant consideration at Apple is the deployment of generative AI, whether it should be on-device, cloud-based, or a hybrid approach. An on-device approach offers advantages in terms of speed and privacy, while a cloud-based setup enables more advanced AI operations. This initiative underscores Apple’s commitment to advancing AI across its product ecosystem to remain competitive in an increasingly AI-driven tech landscape.
