HIMS: A Panacea for Indian Hospitals

HIMS: A Panacea for Indian Hospitals

Rajneesh De, Consulting Editor, APAC News Network

Hospital Information Management Systems (HIMS) are critical to decision making and play a crucial role in the success of a hospital. Today for the healthcare sector, HIMS and electronic medical records (EMR) have become the minimum prerequisites for delivering quality healthcare. No wonder, today’s HIMS are designed to meet all the information needs of hospitals including diverse data types such as patient information, billing, finance & accounting, staffing and scheduling, pharmacy ordering, prescription handling, supplies, inventory, maintenance and orders management, diagnostic laboratory reports, radiology and patient monitoring as well as providing decision support.

The increasing demand for quality healthcare services is making it necessary to harness the power of technology for smoother hospital operations. HIMS comes in handy precisely here as it streamlines and automates various administrative and operational tasks within a healthcare facility. As per researches, hospitals using such HIMS reduce around 25% in administrative costs, indicating significant savings for hospitals. The patient satisfaction is also enhanced subsequently.

Dissecting the Indian HIMS Market

From admission to diagnostic and medical support services, the Indian hospitals today rely much on their HIMS software. HIMS performs a myriad of functions in these hospitals including

  • Patient listing And Patient Payments
  • Appointment Scheduling
  • Electronic Health Records (EHR)
  • Electronic Health Records EHR
  • Billing and Invoicing
  • Prescription Management
  • Practice Management
  • Outpatient Management
  • Laboratory and Diagnostic Integration
  • Inpatient Management
  • Physician Management
  • Data Management
  • Insurance Claims Management
  • Inventory Management
  • Radiology Management
  • Revenue Cycle Management
  • Electronic Medical Billing
  • Appointment Reminders
  • Security and Compliance
  • Reporting and Analytics
  • Telehealth Integration

The Indian HIMS market can be categorized based on three criteria.

By Delivery Mode: The HIMS market on the basis of delivery mode can be divided into on-premise and cloud based. The cloud services holds the major share in the market and is growing at a CAGR of nearly 20%.

By Component: The HIMS market is segmented into software & services and hardware. Software & services account more than half of the revenue share in the market as all the hospitals opt for the software which is expensive. Most of the hardware component is already available with the hospitals.

By End Users: Private Hospitals are the largest contributor towards the HIMS system with more than half the market share. The second position is held by the government hospitals followed by clinics, although all are growing in excess of 20%.

Understanding HIMS Benefits

HIMS are proving to be beneficial for patients and hospitals as well as all the stakeholders in the overall healthcare ecosystem. The benefits are widespread and could be listed under several heads

Enhances Efficiency in Patient Treatment

HIMS streamlines the entire patient treatment process by helping doctors access patient data quickly, including medical history, test results, and prescribed medications. This enables doctors to make more accurate diagnosis and embark on appropriate treatments faster. Patients too benefit from reduced waiting times and improved care, because doctors can focus more on their medical needs rather than getting embroiled in paperwork.

Improves Decision Making of Doctors and Administrators

HIMS helps all healthcare professionals in making wiser decisions about their patients’ health by providing accurate insights from all data, including the past health records and reports. Additionally, these insights aid hospital administrators and healthcare professionals also in making better decisions. By analyzing patient statistics, resource utilization, and financial data, administrators can make strategic choices about staffing, equipment procurement project management, and budget allocation.

Increases Hospital Efficiency

HIMS automates myriad administrative tasks such as appointment scheduling, electronic medical record, billing, and record management. This reduces the chances of manual errors and frees up the workforce to focus on patient treatment. Simultaneously it enhances inter-department communication and improves coordination, leading to smoother operations and shorter patient waiting times. Overall, HIMS definitely boosts the hospital’s efficiency, making it more responsive to patients needs.

Reduces Paperwork

One of the most significant benefits of electronic health records using HIMS is the reduction in paperwork. By digitizing patient data, prescriptions, and billing processes, HIMS eliminates the need for extensive paper documentation. This not only saves time but also minimizes the risk of healthcare data loss or misplacement. Additionally, it contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing the consumption of paper nk. The healthcare professionals can dedicate more time to patient treatment, enhancing the overall quality of healthcare services.

Increases Patient Engagement

HMS enhances patient engagement by using patient portals that can include measures like security of patient’s data, reduces the waiting time and appointment time scheduling time, and many more. Patients can schedule appointments online, receive appointment reminders, manage appointments, and access their medical records and test results electronically. This convenience encourages active participation from the patients, leading to improved adherence to treatment plans and better health outcomes.

Additionally, patients can interact with doctors healthcare providers through secure messaging and on mobile devices and apps. It reduces the need for physical visits and promotes ongoing telemedicine and telehealth dialogues for more personalized care.

Manages Patient Data and Privacy Securely

HIMS ensures the safe handling of electronic medical records that includes sensitive information and hospital data. The software employs effective security measures to protect all important information from data breaches. This not only ensures compliance with privacy regulations but also boosts the trust quotient of the patients. Moreover, with secure data management, hospitals can access patient information quickly and accurately, aiding in better diagnoses and treatment planning while maintaining confidentiality of patient data.

Improves Financial Management and Budget of Hospitals

HIMS optimizes financial management of hospitals by automating billing, invoicing, and claims processing. This reduces errors, minimizes paperwork, and accelerates the revenue cycle. Through financial analytics and reporting features, hospitals gain insights into their financial performance, allowing for better budgeting, enterprise resource planning, and cost control. This hospital software tool also aids in inventory or record management, ensuring efficient use of resources and reducing waste.

Evaluating Indian HIMS Players

Thanks to India’s tech prowess, there are quite a few software developers and ISVs who have developed HIMS software in India. Though India has become the hub of HIMS, most of its adoption is still restricted to the larger public hospitals and the bigger corporate hospitals. Many of the smaller hospitals still have in-house HIS running or disparate IT systems functioning. There are still some popular HIS gaining traction amongst Indian hospitals.

Challenges and Bottlenecks of HIMS Deployment

HIS implementations in India might be on the rise, but still many deployments often fail more. There are three common scenarios of HIS implementation failure. An HIS implementation may start well but might lose steam midway and never get completed. This is often due to the inflexibility of the HIS software, inexperienced implementation teams or a weak administrative will.

Another common scenario in many hospitals often is that the HIS implementation gets completed, but only part of the HIS functionality gets implemented. Often one sees after a year or so after a ‘successful’ HIS implementation, the hospital workforce have stopped using the software. This might be either because the HIMS from the beginning was not user friendly or the workflows were not well planned and configured.

Another common challenge often faced is the shortage of professional healthcare faculty with in-depth knowledge of HIMS and other similar technologies. This often leads to poor acceptance of HIMS Software. There is a lack of health informatics professionals capable of establishing and implementing the techniques even in many big hospitals.

Other technical challenges that fail the implementation of HMS in the healthcare industry include networks and computers having different maintenance problems, lack of standards for Data entry and retrieval and difficulties in training users technically to use HMS.
