New Delhi: To strengthen proficiency in AI skills, the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) is incorporating AI-focused courses into its skilling initiatives, organising Training of Trainers (ToTs), and cultivating partnerships with industries.
The Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, shared this information in a written response in the Lok Sabha on December 18, 2023.
The MSDE actively delivers skill, re-skill and up-skill training through initiatives under the Skill India Mission (SIM), including Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) and others, to equip India’s youth with industry-ready skills for a resilient workforce.
To position India as a global skill hub, the government, through MSDE, has planned to establish 30 Skill India International Centres (SIICs) across states, elevating India’s workforce capabilities to meet international standards.
The recent G20 Labour and Employment Ministers’ Meeting 2023 and the G20 Leaders’ Summit 2023 meetings made commitments to address global skill gaps. G20 countries pledged to work towards well-managed, regular, and skills-based migration pathways.
Commitments include mapping global skill gaps, strengthening national statistical data, and expanding the coverage of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Skills for Jobs Databases in G20 countries.
There’s also intent to develop an international reference classification of occupations for cross-country comparability and mutual recognition of skills.
The Ministry of Labour & Employment is working with the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) and Labour Bureau to adopt indicators and extend the coverage of ILO and OECD skills for jobs database.
During the G20 Education Ministers’ Meeting, members agreed to coordinate and assess the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on education systems. G20 countries expressed support for the equitable use of AI in education and skilling, respecting human rights.
The G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration 2023 also urged supporting educational institutions and teachers to adapt to emerging trends, including AI.
