Mumbai: Tata Institute has introduced a tablet that has the potential to prevent cancer recurrence. After ten years of rigorous exploration, the institute’s researchers and medical professionals crafted a tablet designed to thwart the reappearance of cancer in patients while notably mitigating the adverse effects associated with conventional treatments such as radiation and chemotherapy.
Currently pending approval from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), the tablet is anticipated to hit the market by June-July at an affordable price of Rs 100. Human trials are underway, with outcomes expected within five years.
In the previous experiments with rats, cancer cells were induced, culminating in tumour manifestation. Subsequently, the rats underwent various treatments including radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and surgery. The study unveiled a crucial mechanism wherein dying cancer cells emit chromatin particles that can traverse through the bloodstream, potentially instigating cancer in healthy cells.
In response, researchers administered pro-oxidant tablets containing resveratrol and copper (R+Cu) to the rats. These tablets prompt the generation of oxygen radicals, effectively neutralising the chromatin particles. Upon oral ingestion, the R+Cu tablets instigate the production of oxygen radicals within the stomach, swiftly absorbed into the bloodstream. This process impedes the metastasis of cancer cells and diminishes chemotherapy-induced toxicity.
Termed the “Magic of R+Cu,” this discovery is poised to halve the side effects of cancer treatment and exhibits approximately 30% efficacy in preventing cancer recurrence. Encouraging results have been observed in addressing pancreatic, lung, and oral cancers.
Dr. Badve emphasised its potential to ameliorate treatment outcomes and alleviate financial burdens on patients due to its affordability and broad accessibility.
