New Delhi: In a significant move aimed at promoting renewable energy adoption, the Cabinet has approved the PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. This initiative, with a budget of Rs. 75,021 crore, targets the installation of rooftop solar panels in one crore households across the nation.
The scheme, inaugurated by the Prime Minister on February 13, 2024, offers financial incentives to encourage households to embrace solar power. Under the plan, eligible households can receive a subsidy of Rs. 30,000 for a 1 kW system, Rs. 60,000 for a 2 kW system, and Rs. 78,000 for systems of 3 kW or higher capacity.
Applying for the subsidy is streamlined through a national portal, where households can also select a suitable vendor for the installation process. Additionally, households can access collateral-free, low-interest loans at approximately 7 per cent interest for installation purposes.
Each district will witness the development of a Model Solar Village, serving as a prototype for the adoption of rooftop solar systems in rural areas. The scheme aims to relieve the financial burden on citizens by providing subsidies directly to their bank accounts and facilitating concessional bank loans.
To enhance accessibility and convenience, all stakeholders will be integrated into a National Online Portal, simplifying the application and approval process. Incentives will be extended to urban local bodies and panchayats to promote rooftop solar systems within their jurisdictions.
