New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a rooftop solar scheme providing free electricity. The initiative promises to benefit one crore households by granting 300 units of electricity monthly, with an investment of ₹75,000 crores from the central government.
PM Modi took to social media to announce the initiative, emphasising sustainable development and citizen welfare. He highlighted the scheme’s features, including subsidies directly deposited into bank accounts and concessional bank loans, ensuring no financial burden on beneficiaries. Integration into a National Online Portal will enhance convenience for all stakeholders.
To encourage widespread adoption, PM Modi informed that urban local bodies and panchayats will receive incentives for promoting rooftop solar systems. The scheme promises reduced power bills, increased income, and employment opportunities.
Applications for the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana can be made through the official website, pmsuryaghar.gov.in. The process involves registering, applying for rooftop solar, obtaining feasibility approval from DISCOM, installation by registered vendors, net meter installation, and subsidy receipt after DISCOM inspection.
The government anticipates significant annual savings of ₹15,000-18,000 crore for households through free solar electricity. Additional benefits include income from surplus electricity sales, support for electric vehicle charging, entrepreneurship opportunities, and employment for youth skilled in manufacturing, installation, and maintenance.
