New Delhi: Satnam Singh Sandhu, swore in as a Rajya Sabha MP on Wednesday, becoming the first individual to take the oath in the newly constructed Parliament building. Sandhu, Chandigarh University’s founder-chancellor, received a nomination to the Rajya Sabha from President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday.
The Chairman of Rajya Sabha, Jagdeep Dhankhar, said, “You have created history. You are the first person to have taken oath in the new building of Parliament,” while congratulating him.
Two other members, namely, Narain Dass Gupta, and Swati Maliwal, also officially assumed their roles as Rajya Sabha Members on Wednesday. Chairman Dhankhar extended a warm welcome to the new members following the oath-taking ceremony.
However, a unique incident occurred during Swati Maliwal’s oath-taking, as Chairman Dhankhar deemed her initial oath invalid due to the use of unauthorised words. Consequently, Maliwal took the oath again, ensuring compliance with the established protocol. The composition of the trio includes Sandhu as a nominated member, while Gupta and Maliwal secured their positions as elected representatives from Delhi.
