New Delhi: Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, R.K. Singh, recently unveiled plans for the establishment of a Centre for Energy Transition. This initiative, a joint effort between the Government of India and the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), aims to spearhead sustainable energy transition and innovation in the renewable energy sector.
Singh made this announcement at the 23rd World Sustainable Development Summit (WSDS) hosted by TERI in New Delhi. He highlighted India’s significant achievements in climate action and energy transition, citing that 44% of the nation’s power generation capacity is derived from non-fossil fuel sources, with over 180 GW out of a total of 427 GW stemming from renewables.
He also emphasised India’s proactive approach to meeting its commitments, noting that it has achieved its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) well ahead of schedule. He urged developed nations to acknowledge the imperative for sharing carbon space to facilitate developing countries’ progress.
