New Delhi: The Union Education Ministry recently instructed the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) to put into effect an annual review system for textbooks. Officials have revealed that the initiative aims to ensure textbooks are updated on a regular basis prior to printing for each academic session.
New textbooks are released by NCERT annually, but they did not go through yearly reviews until now. The council has been revising and optimising textbook content actively since 2017. Between 2022 and 2024 a lot of changes were introduced to simplify the syllabus and help students cope with stress during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Justifying the reason behind this initiative, an official at the Ministry said, “NCERT books once published should not remain the same for many years. They should be reviewed every year before printing and if any changes have to be made or some new facts have to be added, they should be included in the books. For instance, topics like Artificial Intelligence (AI) that are evolving.”
