New Delhi: Reliance Jio, Airtel, and Vodafone Idea are urging government action to ban the sale of WiFi 6E routers. According to the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI), these routers use the 6 GHz spectrum band to transfer data. This frequency range is still awaiting the government’s approval for widespread use. The association claims they’re being sold illegally on e-commerce platforms and offline vendors.
In COAI’s letter, addressed to the Department of Telecom, they have stressed that the sale of these routers is illegal and therefore must be stopped immediately. WiFi routers from brands like TP-Link and Google were provided as sample links by the COAI, that offer the 6 GHz band and are being sold online.
Queries regarding the sale of these routers were sent to e-commerce platforms that initially went unanswered. COAI’s Director General, SP Kochhar, warned that selling these WiFi devices might make consumers responsible for illegal transmissions, instead of the actual offenders.
