New Delhi: India is on track to use artificial intelligence (AI) in the food processing sector for the improvement of efficiency, increasing farmers’ incomes, and reducing its impacts on the environment. This initiative was discussed during a conference organised by the National Institute of Food Technology Entrepreneurship and Management (NIFTEM).
The conference saw several senior government officials and advisors come together and insist on a plan to implement AI tools in the country’s food processing industry. Food Processing Secretary Anita Praveen said, “As an industry, we need to create a roadmap.”
MEITY Secretary S Krishnan advocated for broader AI adoption. Krishnan noted that while progress had been made in agriculture, the food processing sector was still in the initial stages of utilising these technologies.
NITI Aayog member Ramesh Chand stated that efficient food processing is “climate-smart” and that the development of portable AI devices for quality assessment of agricultural produce would be a “great service to the nation.”
Officials present at the conference concluded that the use of AI can greatly improve the efficiency of the food sector while India moves towards net zero emissions by 2070.
