In an exclusive conversation with CXO News & APAC News Network, Dr Uma Nambiar, CEO, of Bagchi Parthasarthy Hospital, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore explained the dynamics of data management in healthcare and outlined the plans of the hospital coming up in IISc.
What are your roles and responsibilities at Bagchi Parthasarathy Hospital and at IISc Medical School?
My role is to establish and operationalize the Bagchi Parthasarathy Hospital at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. The hospital is an 800-plus-bed super specialty hospital with postgraduate training and integrated MD PhD / MD M.Tech programs aimed at training clinical scientists. The hospital and the postgraduate medical school will also be focusing on MedTech innovation and research in healthcare including cutting-edge work in AI and ML related to healthcare.
The focus areas for research would be in oncology, neurosciences, cardiac sciences, infections, immunology, endocrinology & metabolic diseases in addition to others
How are new innovations shaping up the review and design of healthcare policies and process standardization and quality of healthcare systems?
The new innovations in technology especially digital technology help to democratize healthcare delivery thus improving the access and quality of healthcare delivery to needy patients and reducing cost significantly. Additionally, there is a significant thrust on developing high-end technology and robust high-end medical equipment in India which is expected to make India a global player in the health tech space
What is the status update of the state-of-the-art CDS Collaborative Lab for AI in Precision Medicine at IISc? What are its chief functions?
The researchers in IISc have multiple leading projects using AI and multiple teams are engaged in work related to precision medicine.
The Bagchi Parthasarathy Hospital will also be a truly smart hospital with fully utilizes the potential of digital technology in order to provide the patients with the full potential of the use of such technology and create an ecosystem that can be used as a template by other healthcare organizations in future
What would be the best practices according to you to achieve standards in health data?
I certainly feel that the following practices should be followed rigorously.
- Discipline in data collection and data management to ensure that the data available is analyzable
- Ensuring that the fields used for data collection are designed in discussion with the users to ensure that collection of unusable data is minimized
- Ensuring agility in data management and where possible using the platform as a service.
What are the new technology initiatives being planned at the different departments of the Bagchi Parthasarathy Hospital?
We will be focusing on enhancing our research in MedTech as well as fostering academic-industry partnerships to further medical research. We are setting up an incubation center for health tech and provisioning a facility to industry partners for beta testing of major equipment. Last, but not the least, we are setting up a state-of-the-art data center to further collaborative research in AI and ML related to healthcare.
