New Delhi: Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Law and Justice Arjun Ram Meghwal stated that the Supreme Court of India has embraced Artificial Intelligence (AI) language technology to translate judicial documents, improve legal research, and automate various processes.
AI has also been utilized to transcribe oral arguments in Constitution Bench matters since February 2023. The minister disclosed that a Committee, chaired by an Honourable Judge of the Supreme Court, has been instituted to supervise translating significant Supreme Court and High Court judgments into vernacular languages. The AI translation committees of the High Courts are actively monitoring the translation of Supreme Court and High Court judgments into regional languages. Eight high courts have implemented e-high court reports (e-HCR), while others are still in the process.
Additionally, the AI Committees have directed the High Courts to request that their respective State Governments translate all central and State legislation, rules, and regulations into regional languages and make them accessible on the respective states’ websites.
