New Delhi: NITI Aayog plans to come up with a roadmap in order to achieve India’s 2070 ‘net zero’ carbon emissions goal. The roadmap will serve as a guideline for energy transition and climate-friendly growth in the country, while fossil fuels, mainly coal and lignite, continue to drive economic growth.
Recognizing the need for the roadmap, BVR Subrahmanyam, Chief Executive Officer, NITI Aayog, highlighted the current challenge that India faces in terms of achieving a balance between growth and sustainability. Considering this, the think-tank is working with all the states to develop a pathway for supporting energy transition across all sectors that contribute to the economy. Subrahmanyam further added that for India to transform into ‘Viksit Bharat’ by 2047, it has to deal with the ever-present threat of climate change.
The pathway that NITI Aayog aims to design is expected to help India in articulating its plan for climate change mitigation at multilateral forums including the UN Climate Conference (COP 29) in Baku, Azerbaijan. In addition, it will also provide a broad framework for the next update of India’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) of reaching ‘net zero emissions’, a climate-action plan that India aims to achieve by 2070. The roadmap document will be released by NITI Aayog in November this year.
