Chennai: Tamil Nadu has lost Rs 1,116 crore to cyber scams from January to September, according to the state’s cyber crime police. While the numbers are high, officials managed to freeze Rs 526 crore and recovered Rs 48 crore, which has been returned to victims.
The state recorded over 91,000 cyber fraud complaints during this period, with phishing, KYC scams, and other digital frauds on the rise. Police emphasize that quick reporting is key to recovering lost funds. Delays, they warn, can reduce the chances of getting the money back.
To make reporting easier, the public is encouraged to use the official cybercrime portal or the helpline number 1930. In a recent case, three men were arrested in Puducherry for allegedly scamming a man out of Rs 1.3 crore with a fake part-time job offer. The suspects traced to an IndusInd Bank account, were taken into custody after an investigation by Madurai rural district police.
Cyber crime officials continue to stress the importance of quick action as they tackle the growing threat of online fraud in Tamil Nadu.
