New Delhi: Indian Railways is set to install the Kavach 4.0 safety system on 10,000 locomotives across the country in a major push for rail safety. This upgrade will happen in two phases and aims to reduce accidents by improving communication and control.
The system, already active on the Kota-Sawai Madhopur route, uses technology like RFID tags and onboard equipment to track train locations, enable automatic braking, and improve real-time communication between trains and stations. In the first phase, which will take four years, all locomotives will get the Kavach 4.0 system. The second phase will expand to cover station and yard equipment as well.
Over the past decade, Indian Railways has cut daily train accidents from 2.6 per day to just 0.5 per day. By rolling out Kavach 4.0, they’re hoping to continue this trend and make rail travel even safer for passengers. This step is part of a larger plan to strengthen the railway network and boost safety measures across the board.
