Gurgaon: Zomato has introduced a new feature called ‘Food Rescue’ to reduce food wastage from canceled orders. The feature lets users within a 3 km radius buy recently canceled orders at a lower price. Despite strict cancellation policies, Zomato says around 4 lakh orders are canceled each year, leading to significant food waste.
With ‘Food Rescue,’ nearby customers can claim these canceled orders, provided the packaging is intact. The original customer gets a refund if they paid online, and the restaurant also receives a share of the payment. Zomato keeps only the required government taxes.
Certain items like ice cream and smoothies, which are sensitive to temperature changes, are excluded from the feature. Delivery partners still get paid fully for their trip, from picking up the order to delivering it to the new customer. Restaurants can choose to opt out if they don’t want to participate.
The new feature aims to minimize food waste and offers a quick way for customers to grab discounted food, while also benefiting restaurants and delivery partners.
