Epsilon Advanced Materials (EAM), a leading global manufacturer of eco-friendly lithium-ion battery (LiB) anode and cathode materials, has announced a strategic collaboration with South Korea’s Daejoo Electronic Materials, which is a top global producer of silicon anode materials.
This partnership is expected to develop a next-generation, graphite-rich Silicon-Graphite composite anode material that will significantly enhance the performance of LiB technology, increasing discharge capacity by over 50%.
In this joint development program, the companies will merge Epsilon’s expertise in synthetic graphite with Daejoo’s advanced silicon material to create a groundbreaking composite anode. This new material is expected to reach a capacity of 450-600 mAh/g, offering an improvement in discharge capacity and battery lifespan, potentially lasting thousands of cycles. It was said that the well-known Japanese trading company Nagase played a critical role in bringing the two companies together to initiate this partnership.
EAM will be supplying synthetic graphite for the project, which Daejoo will incorporate and test in its SiOx-Graphite composite formulations in its laboratories. Similarly, Daejoo will provide samples to EAM, enabling them to adapt and examine the SiOx-Graphite composites in EAM’s facilities. This collaboration is focused on qualifying the materials with cell manufacturers by the end of 2024, following the initial development and evaluation phase.
It should be noted that silicon-graphite composites represent a major advancement in battery technology, combining silicon’s high capacity with the stability of graphite. This composite promises a robust alternative to traditional graphite anodes, meeting modern demands for higher performance, extended life, and fast charging capabilities—qualities essential for the automotive and high-power demand sectors.
Vikram Handa, Managing Director of Epsilon Group, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating: “We are excited to announce our partnership with one of the world’s leading producers of Silicon Anode materials to develop revolutionary battery material technology. This collaboration shows our dedication to accelerating India’s & global transition to clean energy and sustainable mobility. Through continuous R&D efforts like these, we are committed to pioneering advancements in battery innovation. Upon successful completion of our rigorous in-house evaluation processes, we will be well-equipped to meet the evolving needs of the mobility industry by providing high-performance, safe battery solutions.”
Dae Woon Park, Managing Director of Daejoo Electronic Materials, highlighted the strategic value of the partnership, noting: “This partnership marks a significant step forward in our mission to innovate and enhance battery performance. Collaborating with EAM, not only strengthens our presence in the rapidly growing Indian market but also aligns with our global strategy of developing advanced materials tailored to the diverse needs of customers and the market. With EAM, we aim to develop cutting-edge battery materials that will drive sustainable progress and deliver unparalleled value to our customers and stakeholders.”
The Epsilon-Daejoo collaboration not only sets the stage for significant improvements in EV battery performance but also positions both companies as key players in the transition toward sustainable and high-performing energy solutions in India and beyond .
