Assam: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has signed an agreement with IRCON International to manage and maintain electrification infrastructure in the Lumding and Tinsukia divisions. This partnership addresses the growing need for skilled maintenance of Overhead Equipment (OHE) and Power Supply Installations (PSI) as rail electrification progresses in the region.
Focus on Lumding and Tinsukia Divisions
NFR is accelerating electrification in its network, with 425 Route Kilometers (RKM) in the Lumding and Tinsukia divisions expected to be commissioned by June 2025. Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer of NFR, emphasized that the rapid pace of electrification has increased the demand for specialized personnel to maintain and troubleshoot systems.
“The ongoing commissioning of new sections makes maintenance critical to ensure reliable train operations. Partnering with IRCON will help us meet these challenges effectively,” Sharma explained.
IRCON’s Role in Maintenance
Under the agreement, IRCON will provide maintenance and breakdown services for electrification systems over a two-year contract. Known for its expertise in large-scale infrastructure projects, IRCON will also bring advanced technologies and management practices to enhance the reliability of electric traction systems.
Enhancing Rail Infrastructure Efficiency
The collaboration aims to improve the efficiency and reliability of train services in the Northeast, a region with challenging terrains. In addition to maintenance, the partnership will facilitate knowledge sharing between the two organizations, setting a framework for addressing similar challenges in other parts of India.
This agreement underscores Indian Railways’ focus on strengthening infrastructure to support electrification. As NFR continues to expand its network, such collaborations are expected to play a crucial role in ensuring smooth operations and sustainable growth.
