Nagpur: Google and the Maharashtra government have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Center of Excellence (CoE) at the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Nagpur. This development aims to strengthen Maharashtra’s efforts in advancing AI-driven innovation and technology.
AI CoE to Focus on Real-World Solutions
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed the initiative and highlighted its significance during a recent event. “Artificial Intelligence is reshaping technology globally, and the establishment of this CoE will address real-world challenges while creating opportunities for Maharashtra’s youth,” Fadnavis said.
The MoU was signed in Mumbai after a high-level meeting between Fadnavis and Oliver Parker, Vice President of Global Generative AI GTM, Google. Senior officials from Google and the Maharashtra government participated in the discussions.
Broader Plans for AI and Innovation
The AI CoE at Nagpur will focus on fostering research and developing solutions in AI for various sectors. Additionally, Fadnavis mentioned plans to create an “Innovation City” in Maharashtra to drive technological advancements in fields like IT, digital transformation, and gaming.
“The CoE will promote research that addresses practical challenges and ensuresh Maharashtra remains at the forefront of technological progress,” he added.
Tech Industry’s Impact on Nagpur
Fadnavis emphasized that consistent technology-focused initiatives in Nagpur over the past decades have supported sectors like IT, cloud computing, and digital tools, contributing to employment generation in the region.
Google also assured its commitment to investing in deep tech and AI initiatives across India, with Maharashtra being a key focus area. The establishment of the AI Center of Excellence marks another step in Nagpur’s evolution as a technology hub, aligning with broader state efforts to advance research and innovation in AI.
