Chennai: The IIT Madras incubated, ePlane Company has become the first private Indian firm to receive formal acceptance from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for the Type Certification of its electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft, the e200X.
This historic milestone marks India’s entry into eVTOL certification and signals a major leap toward sustainable air mobility in the country.
The DGCA’s acceptance sets the stage for India to establish itself as a leader in advanced air mobility, with a focus on creating regulatory frameworks to enable scalable eVTOL operations.
The e200X has met stringent safety and operational standards for commercial services, with The ePlane Company planning further collaborations with the DGCA to enhance aircraft design and safety measures.
“We are honoured by the DGCA’s acceptance of our Type Certification application,” said Prof Satya Chakravarthy, Founder of The ePlane Company. “This marks a significant step forward for Indian aviation and highlights India’s commitment to fostering innovative, sustainable air mobility solutions. Together, we are paving the way for a cleaner, safer, and more connected future.”
e200X: A Vision for the Future
The e200X features a compact wingspan designed to minimize infrastructure requirements, making it ideal for diverse regions in India and global markets. According to Prof Chakravarthy, “ePlane has spent the last 18 months since receiving Design Organisation Approval from DGCA in May 2023 preparing for this moment. We have worked with stakeholders to develop operational frameworks, forge partnerships, and build the infrastructure needed to support eVTOL services.”
The company has also made significant progress in the Type Certification of the e200X propeller, the first of its kind in the Indo-Pacific region. By leveraging local supply chains, ePlane has successfully reduced production costs, offering a cost-effective solution to consumers.
The e200X aims to revolutionize urban air mobility with fast, eco-friendly solutions for trips between 15 and 100 kilometres. It holds the potential to transform emergency medical services, provide low-emission alternatives to helicopters for aerial tourism, and significantly reduce travel times in congested urban areas.
Pioneering Urban Air Mobility
With the certification milestone, founded in 2019 and incubated at IIT Madras, the ePlane company strengthens its position as a pioneer in Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) in India. The company plans to launch eVTOL services by 2026, targeting the movement of over 5,00,000 people daily within three years of operations.
Aligned with international aviation standards, ePlane’s eVTOL services will also enable expansion into regions such as the Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Europe, Latin America, parts of Africa and the US.
