Chennai: The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) and Christian Medical College (CMC) Vellore have jointly developed PLUTO, a cost-effective and portable robotic device for hand rehabilitation. Designed to address accessibility issues in rehabilitation, the device aims to benefit patients with conditions like stroke, spinal injuries, and Parkinson’s disease.
Focus on Accessibility and Affordability
The device, officially licensed through IIT Madras’ Technology Transfer Office and commercialized by Thryv Rehab Solutions, uses patented technology to assist patients with hand therapy. PLUTO provides precise therapeutic movements and real-time feedback, making it suitable for clinical, rehabilitation, and home settings.
Tested in Indian Homes and Clinics
PLUTO has been tested in Indian homes and implemented across 11 clinics, including at CMC Vellore, where over 15 patients use it weekly for hand therapy. Over 1,000 patients have used the device in the past four years, according to Prof. Sivakumar Balasubramanian of CMC Vellore.
Modular Design and Key Features
The robot uses recyclable materials and includes a modular design with a single actuator and interchangeable mechanical handles. It supports various wrist and hand movements, such as wrist flexion and extension, forearm rotation, and hand opening-closing.
Industry Collaboration for Innovation
Dr. Aravind Nehrujee, who co-developed PLUTO as part of his joint PhD with IIT Madras and CMC Vellore, emphasized the gaps the device aims to fill, particularly in bedside and home-based therapy. Prof. Manu Santhanam, Dean (ICSR) at IIT Madras, highlighted the potential of academic collaborations in driving healthcare innovations, noting that this partnership demonstrates how research can translate into accessible solutions for patients.
The collaboration showcases the role of indigenous research and development in creating affordable healthcare technologies, with potential implications for rehabilitation accessibility across India.
