Bengaluru: Mayank Kumar, co-founder of edtech firm upGrad, and Ayush Mathur, former OYO Europe President, have introduced a new startup, BorderPlus, to connect Indian blue-collar workers with overseas job opportunities. The platform will initially focus on healthcare roles in Germany and plans to expand into other sectors such as hospitality, logistics, and construction.
Focus on Addressing Labor Shortages
BorderPlus aims to address critical labor shortages in countries like Germany and Denmark, where industries such as healthcare and hospitality have been struggling to fill key roles. Mathur, reflecting on his time at OYO, noted a significant demand for housekeeping and similar roles in these markets.
Pilot Programs and Training Centers
The company has launched its pilot training program, enrolling 10 candidates, and intends to scale operations with monthly batches. Training programs will run for 6 to 9 months and include a mix of online, blended, and offline formats. The final phase of training is conducted offline, focusing on preparing candidates with essential language skills.
The first training center is operational in Pune, with another in Mumbai, and more locations planned across India to facilitate final-stage training. To enhance language learning, BorderPlus is developing an AI-powered conversational tool based on OpenAI technology, allowing workers to practice spoken language skills interactively.
Strategic Leadership
While Kumar stepped down from his operational role as upGrad’s Managing Director last year, he remains involved in the company’s strategic decisions while leading BorderPlus.
Looking Ahead
BorderPlus is set to expand its focus to industries like trucking and teaching, as well as explore other global markets. With its AI-based language tools and growing network of training centers, the startup aims to streamline the pathway for Indian workers seeking opportunities abroad.
