New Delhi: Perplexity, an AI-driven search engine startup, has introduced its Sonar API, enabling developers to integrate real-time web search capabilities into their applications. The announcement marks a strategic step in advancing generative AI applications, focusing on affordability and accessibility.
Two API versions target diverse use cases
The Sonar API is available in two variants—Sonar and Sonar Pro. The basic Sonar plan charges $1 per million input and output tokens and $5 per 1,000 searches, with single-search functionality per request. In contrast, Sonar Pro, designed for complex multi-step tasks, costs $3 per million input tokens, $15 per million output tokens, and $5 per 1,000 searches. The Pro version also supports multiple searches per request and offers enhanced context retention with more detailed citations.
Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas emphasized the importance of supporting AI-driven tools with real-time search capabilities. “We aim to make search-grounded large language models accessible and cost-effective,” he said.
Industry adoption highlights API’s practical applications
Companies like Zoom and Doximity are already leveraging Sonar Pro to enhance their services. Zoom integrates the API to provide real-time and private searches within its video conferencing platform, enabling users to access up-to-date web information without leaving meetings. Zoom CTO Xuedong Huang stated that the integration aligns with their goal of streamlining workflows.
Doximity, a platform for medical professionals, uses the API to deliver concise and cited clinical answers to improve patient care. Jake Konoske, Doximity’s product director, noted that the API’s efficiency supports physicians in retrieving accurate information quickly.
Expansion plans include India
Perplexity’s rapid growth is underscored by its $500 million funding round in December, which valued the company at $9 billion. Recently, Srinivas announced plans to recruit talent in India to establish strategic partnerships and expand the startup’s footprint in the region. The launch of the Sonar API signifies a broader shift toward integrating generative AI tools into existing platforms, with a focus on delivering factual and actionable insights.
