Mumbai: Dinesh Waghmare, a 1994-batch IAS officer, has been appointed as the new State Election Commissioner (SEC) of Maharashtra for a five-year term. Waghmare assumed office on January 20, 2025, filling a position that had been vacant since September 2024 following the completion of UPS Madan’s term.
Before this appointment, Waghmare served as the Additional Chief Secretary in the Medical Education Department. Over the years, he has held several significant roles, including Additional Principal Secretary in the Social Justice Department and Chairman and Managing Director of the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) and Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (MSETCL).
As the SEC, Waghmare will oversee critical responsibilities such as preparing and managing electoral rolls and conducting elections for zilla parishads, panchayat samitis, gram panchayats, municipal corporations, and councils across Maharashtra, including Mumbai.
An accomplished academic, Waghmare holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering from Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT), Nagpur, an M. Tech in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur, and an M.Sc. in Development & Project Planning from Bradford University, England.
His extensive administrative experience and academic credentials position him to lead Maharashtra’s electoral processes efficiently.
