New Delhi: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has announced that the ongoing pilot initiative providing cashless treatment up to ₹1.5 lakh for road crash survivors will be extended to all states by March 2025. Currently active in regions like Assam, Chandigarh, Punjab, and Haryana, the scheme has benefitted 6,840 individuals so far. The minister expressed optimism that the initiative would save an estimated 50,000 lives annually by ensuring timely treatment during the critical “golden hour.”
Other initiatives announced by the Minister are:
Mandatory Tech Upgrades for Heavy Vehicles: Gadkari revealed that three new technology-based safety systems would be mandated for new buses and trucks. These include:
An audio warning system to alert drowsy drivers.
Electronic stability control to detect and correct over- or under-steering.
Automatic emergency braking systems for enhanced safety.
Efforts to Address Driver Shortage: The minister highlighted a severe shortage of skilled drivers, with the country facing a deficit of 22 lakh drivers, affecting 75% of transport businesses. Gadkari announced plans to establish 1,250 new driving learning centres with central funding to bridge this gap.
Increased Rewards for Good Samaritans: In a bid to encourage assistance to crash victims, Gadkari announced an increase in the reward for good samaritans, currently set at ₹5,000.
Roadside Helipads and Air Ambulances: The ministry is working with the Ministry of Civil Aviation to facilitate air ambulance operations. Helipads will be set up at roadside amenities, and select hospitals will accommodate air ambulances.
New Standards and Emission Norms: Gadkari confirmed the drafting of Bharat Stage 7 (BS7) emission norms, with consultations to begin by mid-2025. Additionally, standards for E-rickshaws and a carbon credit system under the vehicle scrappage policy are in development to promote sustainability.
Addressing India’s Road Safety Crisis: APAC News Analysis
India’s road fatalities, which rose to 1.72 lakh in 2023, underscore the urgency of Gadkari’s announcements. Expanding safety measures, addressing driver shortages, and mandating technological interventions reflect a comprehensive approach. However, the success of these initiatives hinges on seamless implementation, inter-ministerial coordination, and public awareness. Strengthening road safety infrastructure, coupled with policy enforcement, could significantly reduce India’s alarming road fatality rates.
