New Delhi: The Centre is set to launch a new PM Research Chair scheme to bring back 120 Indian-origin scientists and researchers from across the world to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) over the next five years, in a bid to strengthen India’s higher education and research ecosystem.
The proposal was discussed at a recent IIT Council meeting and is aimed at leveraging global Indian talent to boost advanced research and innovation in key national priority areas. Under the scheme, 120 research fellows will be engaged across three categories – Young Research Fellows, Senior Research Fellows and Research Chairs.
The initiative will focus on 14 strategically important sectors, including semiconductors, artificial intelligence, clean energy and advanced materials. An official from the Ministry of Education said the programme is designed to enhance research capabilities at IITs, promote cutting-edge innovation and improve India’s global position in science and technology.
