Patna: The Bihar government has rolled out a statewide QR code-based monitoring system for rural roads constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY).
The initiative aims to make citizens active partners in road maintenance while improving transparency and response time.
How the System Works
Under the new system, notice boards carrying unique QR codes have been installed along PMGSY roads. Citizens can scan the QR code using their mobile phones, upload photographs of potholes or other defects, and submit feedback directly to the Rural Works Department. This removes intermediaries and ensures complaints reach authorities without delay.
Role of AI
Artificial Intelligence (AI) plays a central role in the initiative. Images submitted by citizens are analyzed using AI to assess the severity and urgency of road damage. Based on this analysis, officials can prioritize repair works more effectively. The AI-based assessment is also integrated with routine departmental inspections, improving the accuracy and efficiency of maintenance planning.
Pilot and Expansion Across Districts
The QR code monitoring system was initially piloted in five districts—Siwan, Supaul, Jamui, Gaya, and Munger. Following positive results, the program has been expanded to 23 districts. The remaining districts in the state are expected to be brought under the system in the coming phase.
Instructions to Field Officials
The Rural Works Department has directed all executive engineers to ensure QR code notice boards are installed on every PMGSY road and that citizen feedback is regularly reviewed and acted upon. Officials have been asked to closely monitor complaints to ensure timely repairs.
Boosting Transparency and Public Participation
The initiative is part of Bihar’s broader push to strengthen accountability and public participation in infrastructure projects. By combining technology with citizen engagement, the state aims to ensure safer, more durable rural roads while empowering communities to actively monitor and protect public assets.
