New Delhi: The Delhi Cabinet approved a Carbon Credit Monetisation Framework that will allow the state government to generate revenue by selling carbon offsets created through its green initiatives in domestic and international markets.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the framework reflects the government’s commitment to tackling climate change while creating an additional revenue stream to support development and public welfare programmes.
The proceeds from carbon credit sales will be deposited into the Consolidated Fund of the State.
Cleared at a Cabinet meeting at the Delhi Secretariat, the proposal enables scientific measurement of emission reductions from government projects, their conversion into carbon credits and subsequent monetisation.
The policy covers initiatives such as electric bus operations, solar energy promotion, plantation drives and waste management programmes.
The Environment Department said emission reductions will be quantified using globally accepted methodologies.
A nodal agency will be selected through a transparent process to manage registration and sale of credits under a revenue-sharing model, with the larger share accruing to the government.
