New Delhi: As part of Road Safety Month 2026, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), in collaboration with telecom service providers, has launched a pilot project to deliver real-time safety alerts to motorists on National Highways to reduce accidents caused by sudden cattle movement.
The initiative is particularly targeted at improving safety during foggy and low-visibility conditions.
The pilot is being rolled out on the Jaipur–Agra and Jaipur–Rewari highway corridors, which have been identified as stray cattle–prone stretches.
Under the programme, location-based alerts will be triggered around 10 km before high-risk zones, giving commuters advance warning to slow down and take precautions.
Safety advisories will be sent through Flash SMS in Hindi, followed by a voice alert carrying the same message.
To avoid alert fatigue, repeat notifications will not be issued to the same user within a 30-minute window.
Alerts will be generated using mapped cattle-prone zones identified through accident data and field inputs, supported by upgraded telecom infrastructure. Based on pilot results, NHAI may expand the initiative to other vulnerable highway stretches nationwide.
As part of the initiative, Reliance Jio has enhanced its platform to support the nationwide dissemination of real-time safety alerts.
