New Delhi:Â The Ministry of Home Affairs has appointed senior IPS Rakesh Aggarwal as the Director General of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) until August 31, 2028.
The appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
Aggarwal is a 1994-batch officer of the Himachal Pradesh cadre. He takes over the top post following the premature repatriation of former NIA Director General Sadanand Vasant Date to his parent cadre, Maharashtra.
After Date’s repatriation, the Appointments Committee had named Aggarwal as the interim chief of the anti-terror agency in December last year. Since then, he has been holding the additional charge of Director General while continuing in his role as Special Director General.
The Personnel Ministry issued the formal order, confirming Aggarwal’s full-time appointment as Director General. His tenure will run until the date of his superannuation in August 2028.
With this appointment, Aggarwal becomes the head of India’s premier counter-terrorism investigation agency, responsible for probing terror-related cases and threats to national security across the country.
