New Delhi: Reliance Jio on Wednesday announced that it has signed a deal with Elon Musk’s SpaceX to bring Starlink’s satellite-based internet services to India, a day after rival Bharti Airtel inked a similar agreement.
However, like Airtel, the deal remains contingent upon SpaceX securing the necessary regulatory approvals to operate Starlink in the country.
Jio said in a statement:
“Through this agreement, the parties will leverage Jio’s position as the world’s largest mobile operator in terms of data traffic and Starlink’s position as the world’s leading low Earth orbit satellite constellation operator to deliver reliable broadband services across the country, including the most rural and remote regions of India.”

Jio and SpaceX have previously been on opposing sides of the debate over how spectrum for satellite communication should be allocated. While Jio advocated for an auction-based allocation, SpaceX favored administrative assignment.
However, the central government has decided to distribute the spectrum administratively in compliance with international standards. Union telecom minister, Jyotiraditya Scindia, has justified the decision to allot spectrum for satellite services rather than sell it at auction, while stating that he wants people to have as many options as possible.
As per the reports, SpaceX has already applied for security clearance from the central government and its application is currently under review at the Home Ministry.
It should be noted that the agreement will allow Jio to explore ways in which Starlink can complement its existing services and extend its connectivity solutions. Jio confirmed that Starlink products and services will be available through its retail outlets and online storefronts.
“Starlink complements JioAirFiber and JioFiber by extending high-speed internet to the most challenging of locations in a quick and affordable manner,” Jio said in its statement. Additionally, Jio plans to establish a dedicated support system for installation, activation, and customer service for Starlink users in India.
