Kolkata: The village of Digambarpur in the South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal has recently set new standards in national rural sanitation.
With support from a global NGO Water for People along with backing from the State Government as well as the gram panchayat, Digambarpur has seen the launch of a faecal sludge treatment plant (FSTP).
Along with another piped water scheme, the FSTP will provide safer sanitation and cleaner water to over 20,000 villagers of Digambarpur.
According to Rabindranath Bera, gram panchayat pradhan of Digambarpur, the FSTP will ensure safe management of faecal sludge ar both household and public institution levels.
The plant was commissioned with the guidance of Jadavpur University and produces 6-10 quintaks of verniconposting fertilizers daily.
Each household para Rs 1000 initially for septic tank cleaning and organic waste collection. For subsequent visits the waste collection team charges Rs 500.
“Our team visits households to collect waste and the FSTP processes them. The solid waste becomes verniconposting fertilizer while the liquid waste is used for agriculture spraying after treatment,” informs Bera.
Digambarpur earned the distinction of Model Village under the Swachh Bharat Mission in 2017 and continues to hold this recognition.
