Chennai: The electronics industry is set to become the largest manufacturing sector both globally and in India, according to S Krishnan, Secretary at the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY).
He highlighted Tamil Nadu’s electronics manufacturing cluster as a frontrunner in global electronics production, underscoring the state’s growing role in the sector.
Krishnan made these remarks during the inauguration of Zetwerk Electronics’ new manufacturing facility in Sriperumbudur.
The event was attended by Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, Tamil Nadu Industries Minister TRB Rajaa, Zetwerk CEO and Co-founder Amrit Acharya, and President of Electronics Business Josh Foulger.
Tamil Nadu’s Role in India’s Electronics Manufacturing Goals
During the event, Krishnan noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set an ambitious target of achieving $500 billion in annual electronics manufacturing. He emphasized that Tamil Nadu’s contribution would be crucial to meeting this goal, stating that nearly 20 to 25 per cent of this target would need to come from the state.
He said the availability of high-quality human resources and the growing presence of regional manufacturers were key factors driving Tamil Nadu’s leadership in electronics production.
“Tamil Nadu’s electronics industry is a crucial asset for India’s manufacturing sector. The presence of skilled human resources and world-class infrastructure continues to attract leading electronics manufacturers to establish and expand their operations here,” Krishnan added.
He further highlighted that the state houses the largest beneficiaries of the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme for electronics manufacturing, with seven out of 27 companies under the IT hardware PLI scheme being based in Tamil Nadu.
Zetwerk’s Contribution to India’s Manufacturing Growth
The newly inaugurated Zetwerk facility is the company’s seventh electronics manufacturing plant in India. Krishnan stated that the unit would play a vital role in advancing India’s $500 billion electronics production goal.
“Zetwerk’s new unit will make a significant contribution to the country’s electronics manufacturing vision. The growth of such enterprises further strengthens Tamil Nadu’s position as the largest electronics manufacturing cluster in the country, particularly in the Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts,” he remarked.
Union Minister Vaishnaw’s Visit to IIT Madras Hyperloop Facility
Following the inauguration, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw visited the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) campus in Thaiyur, where he reviewed advancements in the Hyperloop test facility.
He interacted with faculty members and students, reinforcing the government’s commitment to supporting next-generation transportation technology.
The visits to both the Zetwerk facility and IIT Madras reflect the government’s broader push to position India as a global leader in electronics manufacturing and high-tech innovation.
