Kolkata: The sale of electric vehicles (EV) has seen a tremendous spurt in West Bengal over the last one year. As per data provided by the West Bengal State Transport Department, 45,624 EVs were sold in the state in 2024, more than a 100 per cent increase over 21,431 EVs sold in the previous year 2023.
The lion’s share belonged to e-rickshaws though. While 2 years back 7227 e-rickshaws were sold, the number jumped to 19,130 in 2024.
Even the sales of e-bikes and e-scooters jumped from 11,410 to 22,904 in this time period. The four wheeler passenger EV sales jumped from 2598 to 3395 throughout the last one year.
The State Transport Department informed that sales of e-scooters and e-rickshaws in West Bengal have increased above the national average. This growth trajectory is expected to continue in the next one year too.
With adequate number of charging and docking stations coming up in cities, suburbs and districts, the sales will receive further boost in the coming months.
The government expects this will lead to a significant reduction in urban pollution too.
However, it has not just been EVs but overall automobile sales in West Bengal have jumped up to 11.8 lakhs from 10 lakhs the previous year.
