New Delhi: In a significant push to embed Artificial Intelligence (AI) across diverse disciplines in technical education, the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has set up a new expert committee to explore the integration of AI and Applied AI beyond traditional computer science programmes.
AICTE Chairman Prof TG Sitharam announced that the panel is chaired by Anand Deshpande, Managing Director of Persistent Systems, and includes AI experts from top institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs). The committee has been tasked with designing a framework to embed AI across various domains, ensuring a broader reach of AI education.
“We are establishing a committee to introduce AI laterally across programmes, especially in Applied AI. This includes experts from IITs and NITs who will guide us in spreading AI education across all streams,” said Prof Sitharam.
As part of this wider initiative, AICTE has already introduced AI components in programmes like BBA, BCA, and electrical engineering. The council has also developed new curricula for BBA and BCA to include AI and data analytics. Prof. Sitharam underlined the importance of universal AI literacy, stating that all students should grasp the fundamentals of AI and its real-world applications.
In line with this vision, AICTE has declared 2025 as the ‘Year of Artificial Intelligence’ and launched several programmes aimed at promoting AI education across more than 14,000 institutions, potentially benefiting 40 million students. The initiative includes AI awareness drives, faculty training, and collaborations with major technology firms.
To ensure effective implementation, AICTE is placing a strong emphasis on faculty development. “Our teachers must be trained not only to teach AI but also to adapt to changes, such as modifying assessments so that students don’t simply use AI to complete assignments,” said the Chairman.
AICTE continues to follow a structured curriculum revision process every two years, involving consultation with domain experts to keep course content updated with technological advancements.
