Agartala: Rangachara village in South Tripura district is set to become the state’s first fully solar-powered village.
The village has long struggled with an erratic electricity supply and limited infrastructure. With this solar power project, 600 families of the village will now depend on solar energy for their daily power requirements.
The Tripura government is collaborating with the Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA) and other central agencies to provide uninterrupted power to all the villagers using decentralised solar technology.
The project is being implemented under the solar village scheme and supported by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
In the absence of solar power, the villagers will use the traditional grid power provided by the Tripura State Electricity Corporation. The project includes the installation of rooftop solar panels, battery storage systems and energy-efficient appliances.
The solar power initiative will also cover street lighting, community facilities like schools, health centers and irrigation systems. Solar water pumps for agriculture and solar-powered borewells are also part of the initiative.
While TREDA has been assigned to complete the task within a stipulated time frame, the state government is a ticket campaigning for the installation of rooftop solar panels across the state under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Mufhr Bijli Yojana.
