Amaravati: The Andhra Pradesh government is set to revamp its education landscape with the introduction of LEAP (Learning Excellence in Andhra Pradesh), a transformative education model aimed at enhancing learning outcomes and equipping students with 21st-century skills. The initiative, announced by Education Minister Nara Lokesh, will be implemented from the 2025-26 academic year.
Focus on Foundational Literacy, Skill Development & Technology
LEAP will primarily focus on improving foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) through play-based learning and pedagogy training. A significant highlight of the programme is the integration of an artificial intelligence-driven remedial assessment system that will offer personalised learning solutions for students.
The model comes in response to concerning findings from national education surveys, such as the ASER report, which pointed to poor learning outcomes among students in Andhra Pradesh.
Infrastructure Upgrades & Model Anganwadi Centres
As part of the overhaul, the state will upgrade all pre-primary and primary classrooms with Building as Learning Aid (BaLA) features, creating print-rich, interactive environments for young learners. The government also plans to establish two to three model anganwadi centre schools (AWCs) in each assembly constituency. These centres will include girl child-friendly toilets, reliable electricity, and water connections, strengthening the early childhood education ecosystem.
Curriculum to be Aligned with NEP 2020
The curriculum under LEAP will be in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, emphasising holistic development, value-based education, digital literacy, and 21st-century competencies. Greater importance will also be given to extracurricular activities, leadership skills, and life skills.
Bridge courses will support students transitioning to higher classes, especially those entering Grades 6 and 9. Summer learning packets containing assignments, assessments, and study materials will help students from Grades 6 to 8 prepare better for the new academic year.
Teacher Development & Performance-Linked Training
Teacher development will be a core element of LEAP. Teacher performance data will be linked with student learning outcomes to ensure accountability. The programme will offer robust training modules, showcase best teaching practices through e-content, and provide vocational e-modules. Workshops, mentorship initiatives, and leadership training for school principals will also form part of this initiative.
With LEAP, Andhra Pradesh aims to create a world-class education system by 2029, fostering a generation of students equipped with technical expertise, leadership qualities, and life skills, driven by technology, and incorporating inclusive education practices.
