Kolkata: West Bengal State Drug Control will now conduct special monitoring of medicines sourced from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Delhi and Odisha.
Official notification by the government of this decision will follow shortly after the 9 April discussions at Swasthya Bhavan.
According to the officials, many of the small medicine business owners are purchasing life-saving drugs and selling them at huge discounts in Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, North and South 24 Parganas and even colliery areas.
Spurious drug dealers are taking advantage of this situation, and it has become extremely difficult to identify genuine medicines in this scenario.
The Health officials warned medicine shop owners against purchasing medicines from unknown sellers or factories from other states, especially those medicines without QR codes.
While approximately 300 medicines nationwide have QR codes, primarily from major pharmaceutical companies, the Drug Control suspects a larger prevalence of counterfeit drugs beyond this scope.
The monitoring will include a thorough investigation into the licenses and GST bills of our of-state medicines sellers.
