Renowned scientist and former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Dr K Kasturirangan, passed away at the age of 84 at his residence in Bengaluru on 25 April.
A respected figure in India’s scientific and education sectors, he was also the head of the drafting committee for the National Education Policy (NEP). His mortal remains will be kept at the Raman Research Institute on 27 April for the public to pay their respects.
“I am deeply saddened by the passing of Dr K Kasturirangan, a towering figure in India’s scientific and educational journey. His visionary leadership and selfless contribution to the nation will always be remembered,” said PM Narendra Modi in a social media post.

Dr Kasturirangan played a pivotal role in steering India’s space ambitions for over nine years during his tenure as chairman of ISRO and concurrently served as the chairman of the Space Commission and Secretary to the Government of India.
Under his leadership, the country saw significant advancements in space research and satellite technology.
Beyond space science, he was deeply committed to education reform. He held key roles, including Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University and Chairman of the Karnataka Knowledge Commission.
He also contributed to national policymaking as a member of the Rajya Sabha and the Planning Commission of India.
An astrophysicist by training, Dr Kasturirangan specialised in high-energy X-ray and gamma-ray astronomy. His extensive research covered the study of cosmic X-ray sources and their impact on Earth’s lower atmosphere.
In recognition of his vast contributions to science and education, he was honoured with some of India’s highest civilian awards, Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan, the latter awarded in 2000.
